Jumbo Crabs, Worth Talking about!
Blue crabs live between 3 to 4 years, unless a predator scarfs up the armored crustacean before it’s time. Sea turtles and blue catfish challenge mankind’s prowess for potting a meaty blue, but they can’t compete with the insatiable appetite. Just in the Chesapeake Bay, records show more than 60 million pounds of the “beautiful swimmer that is indeed savory” left the crab docks. All the chatter comes from the jumbos or colossal crabs, however. Each crabber pulls out the grading ruler to see just how huge a jumbo they caught measures. Chesapeake Bay records show the largest crab caught measured point-to-point on the top carapace or shell to 10.72”. This crab even weighed 1.1 pounds! The size gets the crab fan excited, but nothing compares to a colossal crab’s meat!
Comparing a colossal crab to a jumbo, you’ll find many similarities. The two back-paddle legs develop a large muscle that exhibits a bright white color and clean, but buttery taste when cooked. These two desired chunks pick from the colossal and jumbo crabs. The smaller crabs have these chunks, but in a less impressive amount. Jumbo quantities, the half and full bushel include the heaviest and mature crabs. In fact, sometimes a true crab enthusiast can pick more meat from a jumbo than a colossal. It all depends on the catch. Both requires faith in Mother Nature’s goodness. The Official Chesapeake Bay Grading Scale sets aside crabs from 6”-7” as Jumbos and 7” plus as colossal crabs. With the weight and size, a half bushel of jumbos brings about 2.5 dozen and a bushel 5. Pick for recipes or fun or both! Jumbo pieces adorn a cocktail or imperial, while lump packs into a crab cake majestically. Did somebody say Maryland Vegetable Crab Soup? Crack a claw for this recipe. Whichever you choose, these crabs will get you talking!
